Tornadoes can be damaging to property and deadly to people. Tornado conditions are caused when different temperatures and humidity meet to form thunderclouds. This intermixing of humidity and temperatures causes a pressure change that forces wind into cyclonic formations. These formations reach down from the sky and destroy anything in their sight.
Tornado Safety is especially important in the midwest and along “Tornado Alley” and is a corcern for home owners and business owners alike. Here are some tips for the next time your area has a tornado:
- Develop a Family Disaster Plan and supplies kit.
- Identify safe places to go in case of a tornado (e.g. basement or a room without windows).
- During a Tornado Watch, listen to Weather Radio or your local television news for updated information.
- If you live in a mobile home, choose a safe place in a nearby sturdy building.
- During a Tornado Warning, go to a safe place immediately and stay away from windows.
- If in a vehicle, leave it and go inside a sturdy, well-build building. If a building is not available, lie flat in a ditch or depression in the ground.
