As victims of Hurricane Katrina found out in 2005, most people with house insurance do not have flood insurance. This coverage is a completely separate rider for your policy and most people didn’t know to add it, or didn’t feel it was necessary.
Now that we all know the damage that flooding can cause, consider that floods can happen anywhere. In places like New Orleans, where the land is below sea level, flooding is very likely. In places where there are dams or directed rivers or any place where lots of water is readily available, floods can occur. Even in dryer places like Texas, a combination of flood water, erosion and sliding earth can combine into one very dangerous and costly situation.
But there are things that can be done to minimize the impact. Firstly, make sure you have proper flood insurance along with your house insurance. Your insurance agent can help you with this. Secondly, get some of our HSP285 Flood Safety Tips posters and place them around your facility to remind everyone of ways to save themselves and their property from loss.
