Anyone who has lived through World War II (and shortly after) can recall the rush to build bunkers in people’s homes. The ideas was that a family could live out an attack in a bunker until the all-clear was called. The truth is, most of those bunkers offered very little protection. Many of them were ill equipped or undersized or were just plain ineffective, especially in instances where radiation may play a part in an attack or a leak.
Thus, the idea of “Shelter in Place” was born. This theory is that even without a bomb shelter or proper chemical shelter, a family could be reasonable safe in their own home as long as they take precautions. Many of our homes and businesses are very well insulated and can provide some level of protection.
To remind us about the importance of Shelter In Place, we’ve developed a poster which can be hung any where in which a person may need to take shelter from an attack or accident.
