Lightning is a serious safety risk, but you can minimize the risk

by admin on November 9, 2007

I live near Tampa Bay, which is known as the lightning capital of the United States. We have more lightning strikes here than anyone, and many people are injured or killed every year because of these lighting strikes.

Lightning doesn’t have to be a mysterious and dangerous weather anomaly. By following some safe practices, you can better your chances of avoiding a lightning strike.

  • Stay indoors or, if outside, go indoors.
  • Stay away from anything that can conduct electricity.
  • Do not use any hand-held electrical appliances.
  • Do not use the (land) telephone.
  • Get out of the water – stay off of boats in water.
  • If outside and not near a building, seek shelter in a cave, ditch, or canyon. Stay away from tall trees.
  • If you are in a car, stay in the car.
  • Do not shower or take a bath.
  • Stay away from windows and doors, and stay off porches.

We’ve put these tips on a convenience awareness poster which can be put in your building to remind everyone of ways to prevent lightning strikes.
